AI Adoption Report

Artificial intelligence is no longer just a topic for the future – it’s a reality in the workplace. Yet while AI has become part of everyday life, a significant portion of its use occurs outside of controlled structures: as “shadow AI” via private accounts and often involving sensitive company data. At the same time, enormous potential remains untapped due to uncertainties regarding data protection and compliance. Our AI study highlights where the greatest risks lie, what potential is on the table, and how companies can enable the secure use of AI.

Key Insights

Shadow AI is the rule, not the exception

41% use personal accounts for work-related AI tasks – bypassing IT, data protection, and compliance.

Uncertainty is slowing down the work

One in two people has already avoided using AI at work or abandoned a task they had started—out of concern for data and compliance.

The higher the floor, the more relaxed the rules

As one's position in the company rises, so does a sense of complacency – managers share sensitive data much more freely than their teams do.

As a company grows, so does its complexity

In-house AI solutions in use: 4% among small companies, 21% among large companies – and as maturity increases, so does the need for oversight.

The greatest potential remains untapped

92% do without AI support at least occasionally, even though it would have made their work easier.

Regulated industries are lagging behind

The IT, finance, and media sectors use AI on a daily basis (55–63%), while public administration and education lag significantly behind (29–34%).

Using AI safely does not mean putting the brakes on innovation. The goal is to provide a reliable framework. Companies that take this approach early on not only gain a security advantage but also a tangible productivity advantage. Because our study shows: Even among experienced users, too much of AI’s potential remains untapped.

Methodologically sound, practically relevant

This study is based on a representative online survey of 4,000 working adults who use AI in their jobs. The polling firm Civey conducted the survey from August 5 to 14, 2026. The margin of error is approximately ±2.5 percent.

As such, the study provides a reliable overview of the actual use of AI in German companies – beyond the hype and theory. It shows how employees really use AI, what barriers they encounter, and where untapped potential still lies.
